Adventure Sports

Skate parks, climbing walls, ropes course, ice skating, adventure trips, in-line skating, martial arts and more adventure programs can offer a unique experience at the YMCA. While program availability varies by YMCA location, keep in mind that a membership at the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago gives you access to all of our locations.

Preschool (1-5 yrs)

Climb and Swim

Children climb while parents learn to belay for the first 45 minutes.  Entourage your child as you work together learning how to climb.  For the second half, children will have a YMCA swim lesson.

Climbing Tykes

This class is for tykes and a parent who are ready to rock climb. Encourage your child as you work together learning to climb.

Kinder Klimb

Our newest Rock Climbing class is for those who are interested in participating in a new adventure. Children will learn the basics of climbing and climbing safety. All participants will wear a harness and helmet. The class will focus on bouldering which is climbing the wall horizontally and be introduced into climbing the wall vertically as they progress throughout the program.

Pee Wee's Climbing Adventure

This class is an absolute, pure delight. The bare basics of rock climbing will be introduced to your young wall crawler. Self esteem and confidence are established in this 45 minutes of power.

Tae Kwon Do Tigers

This slower paced Tae Kwon Do class will have a strong emphasis on self-discipline, coordination and concentration... and, of course, fun. Students will learn Korean terminology, kicking and punching and basic self-defense. This class also provides a good foundation for their entry into the Beginners Tae Kwon Do program.

Tiny Tae Kwon Do Tigers

Parent & Child Program. Tae Kwon Do is great fun for kids...and a great way to give kids a head start on life. Instructors teach the positive benefits of self-discipline and confidence, develop coordination and increase strength and flexibility.

Youth (6-12 yrs)

Advanced Inline

This class is for the experienced inliner who has vast confidence in his/her ability and has been on their blades for quite some time. We will attempt to skate on the quarter pipe and master the fun box. Fine tune your dropping in. Helmets and knees pads are required to skate.

Advanced Tae Kwon Do

Prerequisite: Blue Belt (High Green only with instructor's approval) This class is geared toward students who have trained in the program for some time and have progressed to a high intermediate or advanced skill level.

Adventure Fun Tuesdays

This programs combines climbing, team building and Nintendo Wii. Join us for an exciting combination of fun and fitness.

Aikido Self-Defense

Aikido is a Japanese martial art that is an effective form of self defense for students of all ages and fitness levels. You will learn how to avoid conflicts and defend yourself against a variety of attacks such as grabs, punches, kicks, and chokes. Aikido technique practice also improves balance, coordination, and flexibility.

Andes Ascendors

Participants will combine the skills they may have learned in Pike’s Tikes, and learn more of the skills needed to become a successful climber and belayer. Focus will be on knot tying,equipment use, set-up, and climbing commands.The group will learn how to safely climb up the high ropes course in this class, as well as other fun activities such as Giant’s Ladder and Pamper Pole. Climbers will set personal climbing goals to achieve by the end of the session.

Ascenders

This class is basically for kids just starting out and yearning to get their climbing career underway. We will provide the necessary tools and motivation to ensure that the students will have a positive experience. The basic elements of climbing; commands, technique, and confidence are the cornerstone of this class.

Beginner Kids Kung Fu

This class will focus on basics including stretching, stances, kicks and basic forms. No uniforms are needed and participants should wear loose pants.

Beginning Inline

A great introduction to this challenging and fulfilling sport. The core elements are covered in this class; learning to get going and stopping; making turns and going down ramps. Safety tips will covered extensively. Helmets and knee pads are required to skate.

Beginning Skateboard

This class is for the absolute beginner. Gain the confidence you'll need to start out in this far out sport. Learn to gain balance on your board and make turns. Ultimately, you will be able to go down on our ramps and use our fun box. Safety tips will be covered extensively. Helmets and knee pads are required in order to skate.

Belayers

Instruction and basic movement & technique class.  This is a progressive class that takes participants from the basic to the intermediate skills of climbing.  Participants will learn harness and belay set up, top rope belay techniques, knots, movement on the rock, bouldering, safety skills, and goal setting.  Upon successful completion of the belayers skill development program and belay test, climbers may progress to our Rock Solid Program.

Boxing for Kids

Join us for this high energy class. Kids will learn the fundamentals of boxing and they will learn to train in the
disciplined style of the boxing pros. All fitness levels encouraged to participate!

Climb & Swim

The kids will learn all the basics of rock climbing for the first part of class, and than spend the 2nd half of class in the pool learning the basics of swimming, all while having FUN!

Climb Trotters

Join the legendary Climb Trotters as we journey to far way climbing walls in our area. Enjoy the day trips while pushing your climbing skills to the limit.

Combination Skate and Climb

This class will be split into halves. The first half will be spent skateboarding in our skate park. The second half will be dedicated towards climbing at our rock climbing wall. Basically, you're getting the best of both worlds in the adventure realm.

Competitive Edge Climbing

This class will get your competitive juices flowing! We will have route competitions to see who can accumulate the greatest number of points. We will incorporate wall games that you can't imagine or fathom. This class is geared towards the more experienced climber.

Final Destination Sunday

We are pulling no punches. This is the "final destination" for all wall crawlers. The Final Destination is more advanced and daunting than our very own hallowed Mt. Lion class. Students will learn how to belay fellow climbers. We will ensure that each pupil strives to reach their final destination. For the confident, mature climber.

Hapkido

Hapkido means the way of harmony and power. It is an effective Korean martial art consisting of joint locks and pressure point control techniques. Students will learn defense against chokeholds, grabs, throws, headlocks, wrist & arm grabs, and attacks with weapons. Students will also learn legal and street-safe techniques to handle a variety of real world situations. Hapkido is also a way of staying healthy and fit.

Home School Climb

This class is designed for the home school student who is looking for challenge. Enjoy our rock climbing wall while building friendship to last a lifetime.

Intermediate Tae Kwon Do

Prerequisite: Green Belt or High Green Belt - This class is the next step for students who have perfected their foundation techniques and have progressed to an intermediate skill level. Form, self-defense and Korean language skills are still practiced. Students continue to hone their skills in all areas but a greater emphasis is placed on fitness and personal development. Contact sparring and ground grappling are also introduced at this level.

Intermediate/Advance Skateboard

This is class is for the mature skater who knows the ups and downs of skating. Improve your stunts and tricks. Master the flip turn. Dominate the fun box and be able to call it your very own. Safety is still vitally important in this class and we'll continue to cover this crucial aspect of this exhilarating sport. Helmets and knee pads are required to skate.

Judo

Judo literally means the gentle way. This ancient martial art makes use of the opponent's strength to overcome him. The main techniques of this art are tripping, sweeping, throwing and both stand up and ground grappling. A significant portion of class time is also spent learning how to fall safely and controlling your opponent on the ground.

Karate Clinic

This clinic is offered to all enrolled participants who are yellow belt and up. Once a month we will be rotating between a kata (forms) clinic and kumite (sparring) clinic. This will be a class where time will be spent on technique for a specific kata and more technical (timing, distancing, power, and control) aspects of kumite. Check with your instructor to see what will be covered on a specific month.

Kinder Climb

This is our rock climbing class for kids who are interested in participating in a new adventure. Children will learn the basics of climbing and climbing safety. All participants will wear a harness and helmet. The class will focus on bouldering, which is climbingthe wall horizontally, and be introduced into climbing the wall vertically as they progress throughout the program.

Laser Tag

The Y and Gamedudes of Chicago are joining forces to offer this absolute bonanza of a class. We'll be playing the timeless game of laser tag in our own field house. Sounds exciting? It is. Period.

Like Father Like Son

Fathers can spend quality time with their sons on the climbing wall. Fathers belay sons while teaching their sons respect. All while creating memories that last a life time.

Mountain Lions

This is the ultimate advanced rock climbing class in our portfolio. Kids will ultimately learn how to self belay and belay other climbers. No stone will be left unturned in the world of climbing in this challenging class. Advanced climbing games will be offered in this course. We will be taking a field trip to another climbing wall on the last day of class.

Mountain Trekkers

This is a class for the climber who has had at least a year of climbing under his/her belt. We will undertake the daunting task of route climbing. We will also learn knot tying and other advanced rock climbing procedures.

Pikes Tikes

Pikes Tikes is an introductory climbing class for children ages 6-8 that teaches the basics of climbing in a fun and safe setting. This class will educate climbers on basic climbing techniques, gear setup, communication skills,and harness set-up and safety. Participants will use the auto-belay system as well as being belayed by an instructor on the wall throughout the class. Climbers will set goals to achieve by the end of the session. They may even get to try out our Giant’s Ladder or Pamper Pole. Pikes Tikes exposes kids

involvement and enjoyment of the sport.

Progressive Rock Climbing Classes

Wall Crawlers is an introductory rock climbing class for children in the first and second grade that teaches the basics of climbing in a fun and safe setting.

Rock Lizards

Participants will learn the skills needed to become a successful climber and belayer. Focus will be on knot tying, equipment use and set-up, climbing communication/commands and techniques used for proper belaying.

Rock Monkeys

Your youngster will catch the rock climbing fever in this fun filled and challenging class. We will lay the foundation for a long and fruitful climbing career. Kids will learn to climb, build confidence and self-esteem.

Rock Solid

Our Rock Solid Class is fro those climbers who have successfully completed our belayer skills development and belay test. Climbers will earn advanced foot placements, body movements, route climbing, as well as an intro to lead climbing, quickdraws, lead belaying, and rope management. Climbers in this program have an opportunity to participate on our Youth Demo Team.

Rock Solid Climbing Competition

Rockin' Rockies

Rockin Rockies is a certification class for children ages 12-14 that teaches climbing in a fun and safe setting, and is a great next class from Andes Ascenders. This class will educate climbers on intermediate climbing techniques, advanced gear setup advanced communication skills, and safety. Participants will be certified in how to use the auto belay.  system and to manually belay with an instructor by the end of the session. Climbers will also set personal goals to achieve by the end of the session. We will also use a variety of other obstacles throughout the session. Rockin Rockies exposes kids to the art of climbing while encouraging continued involvement and enjoyment of the sport.

Skateboard Class

Designed for the beginner through intermediate skater. Our skate instructors will teach both flat land, rail, and ramp techniques in these exciting classes.

Sky Walkers Expedition

This awesome expedition class takes place in our Adventure center up on our high ropes course.  Participants will be presented with challenges on the earth quake tremor, the floating beam, the loop rope bridge, the kitten crawl, and so much more.  Each participant will log every challenge and accumulate vertical and horizontal footage needed to become a member of our Sky Walkers Expedition Team.  Step out of your comfort zone and join us for the excitement and challenge of this unique program.

Skywalkers (High Ropes Class & Slacking

This is an exciting combination of slacking and high ropes adventures. What is slacking? Slacking s an adventure sport that combines balance, agility and strength while working with a tight rope. Trust us, you'll dig this. Combine slacking with the Buehler always fun high ropes course and you have a combination the is intriguing and daunting at the same time.

SLACK AND CLIMB

This is an exciting combination of slacking and rock climbing. What is slacking? Slacking is an adventure sport that combines balance, agility and strength while working with a tight rope. Trust us, you'll dig this. Combine slacking with wall climbing and you have a combination that is intriguing and daunting at the same time.

Slacking in Styles

This exciting new program increases participants' balance, foot speed, hand-eye coordination and energy levels using innovative skills development props such as slack lines, Indo boards, foot bags and more.  Class meets in our Adventure Center for an hour of nonstop fun, action, and movement.  Skills learned in this program will enhance many activities.

Special Needs Climbing

This is a wonderful class for kids that are curious about the wold of climbing. Children will learn to climb, build confidence and increase self esteem. This class is run in conjunction with Seaspar.

Sport Wall & Climbing Wall Combo

This class combines the fun of our Sportwall with the challange of our climbing wall! This is a fast paced class that will make your child move and perspire!

Tae Kwon Do Tigers

This slower paced Tae Kwon Do class will have a strong emphasis on self-discipline, coordination and concentration... and, of course, fun. Wall Games

We will be playing various wall climbing games in this course that will be entertaining and fun at the same time. This class is geared toward the experienced climber who has conquered our seven routes.

Youth Tae Kwon Do (Karate)

Martial arts is great fun for kids and a great way to give kids a head start on life. Instructors will teach the positive benefits of self-discipline and confidence, develop coordination and increase strength and flexibility. These classes are for beginners, White to Yellow belts only, but some centers allow all levels.

Teen (13-17 yrs)

Wall Techniques For Teens

Are you interested in learning all there is to know about our 23 foot climbing wall? Do you have a desire to learn the techniques of belaying and knot tying? If you answered yes to those questions, then you need to register for this course, without hesitation. This course could very well lead to volunteer opportuniities on our wall, assisting with open climb and rentals. Don't minimize the possibility of you becoming a part of our legendary adventure team when you turn 16.

Youth Tae Kwon Do (Karate)

Martial arts is great fun for kids and a great way to give kids a head start on life. Instructors will teach the positive benefits of self-discipline and confidence, develop coordination and increase strength and flexibility. These classes are for beginners, White to Yellow belts only, but some centers allow all levels.

Adult (18+ yrs)

Adult Rock Climbing

Learn the fundamentals of climbing: belaying, rope management, balance and form, hand and foot techniques, partner communication skills, environmental consideration and ethics.

Boxing lessons

The ultimate workout. You can punch away pounds and stress and get a great cardio workout by jumping rope, shadow boxing or hitting focus mitts to high energy tunes. So, if you're looking for a challenge, check out our boxing program.

Cliff Hangers Adult Climbing

Participants will learn the skills needed to become a successful climber and belayer.Focus will be on knot tying, equipment use and set-up, climbing communication/ commands and techniques used for proper belaying. All different types of difficult activities and routes will be a challenging part to a great course offering.

Couples Sky Walkers

This is a 4 week session  Our new class has you and your partner learning to work together in a new and adventurous way. This class will help build trust by utilizing our high ropes course and using team building or low ropes initiatives exercises.

Karate

Learning self-defense helps you feel safe and confident in today's society. Martial Arts are an excellent form of stress management. Getting in shape and feeling good offers a balance to our often busy and demanding lives. See front desk for more details.

Women's Rock Climbing

A class designed for women who are interested in learning how to climb.  In this class, students will learn climbing techniques and foot, hand and body positioning, as well as rock climbing communication and safety.

Family

Family Martial Arts

Parent & Child Program. Parents and children may train together learning how to kick, punch and apply self-defense techniques while spending a little together time as a family.

Family Sky Walkers

Experience the fun of reaching new heights with your child while learning to work together! Out staff will push you and your child's limits on our 20ft. indoor ropes course. Having both of you experiencing new challenges using body, mind and spirit every week.

Parent/Child Tag Team Climb

Tag your it, your turn to go up the wall!! This parent child tag team climbing class will satisfy both the child and parent need to conquer the Buehler climbing wall.

All Ages

Mixed Martial Arts

The Mixed Martial Arts system draws techniques from aikido, boxing, hapkido, judo, kickboxing and wrestling. The training philosophy of this system is to combine the most effective aspects of these martial arts into a superior form of realistic self-defense.

Modern Arnis/Self Defense

Beautiful, ingenious and fun martial arts class, blending Filipino stick, karate and jujitsu. Perfect for all ages.

Open Climb

Open climb times are available to anyone within ages specified. All participants must have a current waiver form signed for 2010. All children under the age of 18 must have parent or legal guardian sign a waiver. Come and challenge yourself. You will dig our rock climbing wall that stands tall and the staff that mans it.

Open Skate

All skaters must have a waiver signed by their parent unless they are age 18 or older. Helmets and knee pads are required to skate.
